Starfish Lessons: How to Rebuild After Life Knocks You Down
Some of the most powerful lessons don’t come from books or classrooms… they come from nature. One of my favorites? The starfish.
When I was in my early 20s, my sister and I traveled back to California to visit my dad. We went to a beach I had loved in high school, the kind of place where the rocks form tide pools you can spend hours exploring. We found seashells of many kinds to bring home to the Midwest, but what I remember most are the starfish we saw, caught in those tide pools.
At first, we worried about them. But then we realized: the tide would rise again. The pools were deep enough to keep them safe until the ocean tides came back to sweep them into its rhythm. They weren’t lost and they hadn’t been forgotten… they were waiting.
That’s what the starfish has always meant to me, a picture of resilience, of renewal, of being carried back into life, even when it feels like you’re stuck.
The Starfish as Teacher
Later in life, I also learned that the starfish has the incredible ability to regenerate. If it loses an arm, it can grow it back. Sometimes, it can even grow into a whole new starfish from just one piece. What can look like loss is actually the beginning of renewal.
It simply rebuilds, piece by piece, until wholeness returns.
That’s not so different from us. Life has a way of breaking us through loss, trauma, failure, or even seasons where we lose parts of ourselves we thought we’d never get back.
But like the starfish, rebuilding is possible. Renewal is in your nature, and like so many, I am living proof of that.
Renewal After Setbacks
You may feel like you’ve lost too much time, too much energy, or too many chances to start again. I’ve been there too. I know what it feels like to lose parts of yourself – confidence, direction, health, even joy and wonder if they’ll ever come back.
But like the starfish, your story doesn’t end with what’s been taken. Healing and growth don’t erase the past; they create something new from it. A life rebuilt with wisdom, strength, and resilience.
Three Starfish Lessons for Healing
- What’s lost isn’t the end.
Losing a “piece” of yourself – a relationship, a job, your confidence – doesn’t mean you’re broken forever. It’s the start of renewal. I thought being in my late 60s meant I’d missed my chance. But here I am, now 70, learning, building, showing up anyway. If I can do it, so can you. - Healing takes time.
Just as a starfish slowly regenerates, your healing and growth won’t happen overnight. Small steps count! They are a start, and as you keep taking steps forward, you continue to build momentum. I’ve learned patience the hard way. Growth often feels invisible before it becomes real, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t happening. - You are built for resilience.
The starfish is living proof that restoration is written into its very design. So is yours. Every scar I carry proves I’ve already made it through what I thought I couldn’t… and so have you – you can always rebuild again!
Remember…
Your past does not define your future.
Like the starfish, you can regrow what you thought was lost. You can rebuild your life, no matter your age, your story, or your scars.
You are regenerating, rebuilding, and you are stronger than you know.
If you’re reading this, know and remember: you are strong, capable, and rebuilding. And that’s powerful.
