Affiliate Marketing Explained (The Simple, Real-Life Version)

Affiliate Marketing

Maybe you’ve heard the term before and thought, “That sounds complicated… or scammy.” I get it. When I first looked into it, I felt the same way.

But here’s the truth: affiliate marketing is simply recommending something you already like and getting paid when someone buys through your link. That’s it.

No inventory.

No shipping boxes stacked in your living room.

No begging your family to buy from you.

It’s as simple as telling a friend about your favorite beachside café… only this time, the café thanks you with a paycheck.

What Affiliate Marketing Actually Is

Here’s the simple version:

You share a product or service you like.

Someone clicks your special link and buys.

The company pays you a commission.

That’s affiliate marketing in a nutshell.

No warehouses.

No shipping headaches.

No late-night customer service calls.

It’s a partnership, the company gets a new customer, and you get rewarded for connecting them.

Think about it this way: you probably recommend things all the time without realizing it. A good book. A new recipe. Your favorite lotion. That one brand of coffee you always reach for.

Usually, the company never knows you referred someone, and you definitely don’t get paid.
Affiliate marketing simply makes that natural sharing trackable. With your link, the company can see the customer came from you, so they say “thank you” with a paycheck.

Why People Like Us Choose It

I’ll be 70 in less than 10 days, and I’m building my business with affiliate marketing from home. If you’d told me a few years ago I’d be doing this, I probably would’ve laughed. But here’s why people like us, people in our 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond, are choosing this path:
Flexibility. You can work from your kitchen table, your favorite chair, or even while traveling.

You set the pace.

Low cost to start. You don’t need to invest in inventory, rent a storefront, or hire staff. You need a computer or phone, internet, and the willingness to learn.

No age limit. You don’t have to be a 20-something influencer with a ring light to do this. You just need life experience and honesty. People trust real voices.

Purpose + income. For many of us, money feels tighter than it used to. Retirement isn’t what we hoped. Groceries cost more, and health expenses pile up. Affiliate marketing can bring in extra income while giving you a sense of purpose.

For me, it’s about both. Yes, I want to create income. But I also want to show others that starting fresh in your 50s, 60s, or 70s isn’t just possible, it’s powerful.

What Affiliate Marketing Is Not

Before we go further, let’s clear up a few myths. Affiliate marketing is NOT:

🚫 A get-rich-quick scheme.
It takes learning, consistency, and showing up. If anyone promises you overnight riches, run the other way.Affiliate marketing is simply sharing what you love and being paid for the ripple effect

🚫 Selling to friends and family.
This isn’t about begging your cousin to buy from you. It’s about connecting people who are already looking for something with a product or service you believe in.

🚫 Stocking your garage with boxes.
You don’t handle inventory, shipping, or returns. That’s the company’s job.

🚫 Only for “techy” people.
If you can learn to use Facebook, send an email, or shop online, you can learn the tools of affiliate marketing.

Here’s what it really is: a flexible way to share and earn… on your schedule.

I even tested this when I traveled to California recently with my granddaughter, Lexi. For two weeks, we ran up and down the coast from Fresno to the Getty Art Museum, La Brea Tar Pits, beaches, Hearst Castle, San Francisco, a NASCAR race, and so much more. And while I was enjoying that time with her, my affiliate content was still working for me online. I had posts scheduled ahead, and people could still click my links while I was on the road.

That’s the beauty of it: life doesn’t have to stop for your business, and your business doesn’t have to stop for your life.

Why It Fits This Season of Life

Affiliate marketing isn’t just for the young crowd with TikTok dances and ring lights. It’s for people like us, people with stories, scars, and wisdom to share.

Here’s why it fits so well in this season of life:

  • Money feels tighter. Prices climb, retirement doesn’t stretch as far as we hoped, and unexpected expenses show up. Affiliate marketing can create extra income without requiring another 9–5 grind.
  • We’re craving purpose. Once kids and grandkids grow into their own lives, or after years of focusing on everyone else, it’s normal to wonder, “What’s mine now?” Sharing products and tools that help others can bring that spark of meaning back.
  • We’ve got credibility. At 40, 60, or 70, you’ve lived. You’ve worked, raised kids, been through ups and downs. People trust real voices, not just polished ads. Your perspective has value.
  • We need flexibility. Health challenges, family responsibilities, and just plain wanting to enjoy life mean we don’t want rigid schedules. Affiliate marketing lets you work in pockets of time, from anywhere, even while traveling.

At this stage of life, many of us are asking the same question: “How can I create income, freedom, and something to leave behind, without giving up the rest of my life?”

For me, this path has become the answer.

Closing

If affiliate marketing still sounds complicated, let me remind you: it’s simply sharing what you love and being paid for the ripple effect.

No one is too old.
No one is too late.
No one is disqualified because of where they’ve been.

I’m proof. I’m stepping into this at nearly 70, after a lifetime of ups, downs, trauma, healing, and rebuilding. If I can start fresh and build something meaningful from home, so can you.

Affiliate marketing fits this season of life because it’s flexible, simple at its core, and built on something we’ve always done: recommending what works.

So if you’ve been wondering how to create extra income, how to add more purpose to your days, or how to finally build something of your own — consider this your permission slip.

Change is okay – at any age, for any reason.

And affiliate marketing might just be the tool that helps you do it.
